We are pleased to announce that Marco Afonso has committed to the highest scoring team in Division 1, the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG), for his graduate studies. The South African winger will transfer to UNCG after finishing his undergraduate degree at Grand Canyon University (GCU). Afonso was a key player for GCU in his 4 seasons there and was instrumental in GCU’s first-ever Conference Championship in 2018, scoring the only goal in the semi-final and assisting the sole goal in the championship final.
2021 was a record-setting year for UNCG, who led the nation in goals scored per game and goal differential
Led by French striker, Theo Collomb, who signed a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS in March, UNCG had one of the most productive and explosive offenses in the country last year. The UNCG Spartans scored a total of 52 goals, scoring 3 or more goals in 10 games last year.
The Spartans, ranked in the top 25 teams in the nation for most of the season, enjoyed some memorable victories such as their 3-1 win over Clemson in September. Clemson won the 2021 national championship.
