Giorgos Leon Diakos will be joining the University of Charleston in West Virginia. Diakos, a versatile midfielder who was a member of Anorthosis Famagusta’s first team, cited the men’s soccer program’s stellar track record and success of previous JSA athletes at Charleston as key factors in his decision to become a Golden Eagle. Diakos will be the third Cypriot player in the program’s history, following Christos Charalambous and Ploutarchos Alonefti who were both named All-American during their time at Charleston and were both key players in Charleston’s 2019 national championship-winning season.
Charleston has established itself as the best Division II program in the nation over the past decade, reaching 5 national championship finals since 2014 and being crowned national champions in 2017 and 2019. Charleston alumni in the pros include Chris Allan of Memphis 901 and Thomas Vancaeyezeele who plays in the USL.
